Councilmember and President of Greater Palm Springs Pride, Ron deHarte
Palm Springs Mayor Grace Garner and City Councilmembers Ron deHarte and Jeffrey Bernstein will present a special proclamation next Tuesday, April 18th at the upcoming Drag4Drag Rally in Downtown Palm Springs.
The rally has been organized in response to the recent wave of anti-drag legislation sweeping the country by Desert Stonewall Democrats, the Coachella Valley’s leading LGBTQ+ political organization, along with the local drag community and ACLU Desert Chapter. Councilmember deHarte serves as president of Greater Palm Springs Pride, which has also been instrumental in planning the event.
The proclamation, which declares April 18th, 2023, as “Drag Celebration Day,” honors the drag community’s contributions to the City of Palm Springs’ culture and heritage, and highlights the art of drag as a vital part LGBTQ+ culture, promoting self-expression, creativity, and acceptance.
As a city known internationally as a safe haven and destination for LGBTQ+ residents and visitors, “Drag Celebration Day” highlights the City’s strong commitment to supporting the visibility, dignity, and equality of LGBTQ+ people. The proclamation serves as a timely response to the discrimination and anti-drag legislation that has been proposed in other parts of the country, posing a threat to the rights and freedoms of drag performers and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole.
The Drag4Drag Rally will take place on Tuesday, April 18th at 5 pm at the iconic Forever Marilyn statue in Downtown Palm Springs.
Participants are encouraged to attend in drag attire and carry protest signs, demonstrating unity with the drag community. Social Ambassador Bella da Ball, the Hostess with the Mostest, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, alongside renowned local activist DJ Galaxy.
