A Japanese high court in Nagoya ruled Friday that the nation’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, marking the ninth legal victory for same-sex couples since 2019.
This decision, the fourth consecutive high court ruling against the government’s policy, strengthens the push for equal rights.
With an upcoming ruling in Osaka, the Supreme Court is expected to consolidate appeals and issue a final decision. The Nagoya court cited constitutional guarantees of equality and individual dignity in its ruling.
