California officials are standing firm against the Trump administration’s threat to cut federal funding, vowing to uphold a state law that safeguards the privacy of transgender students.
The dispute centers on AB 1955, which protects students who may be “out” at school but not at home, and prevents teachers from being forced to disclose a student’s transgender identity to their parents.
State Superintendent Tony Thurmond emphasized the importance of student safety, stating, “Our students must be safe in order to learn.”
The U.S. Department of Education claims the law violates parental rights under the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act.
