Norwegian Candidate: Offer Asylum to US Transgender People Fleeing Trump Policies

Karina Ødegård

Karina Ødegård, a Green Party candidate and spokesperson aiming to be Norway’s first openly transgender member of parliament, has proposed offering asylum to transgender individuals fleeing the U.S. due to the Trump administration’s anti-transgender policies.

In an interview with Aftenposten, Ødegård expressed deep concern over the “illiberal democracy” and the targeting of transgender people as “scapegoats.”

She emphasized the importance of public affirmation and recognition for transgender individuals, stating that the Trump administration’s withdrawal of rights constitutes “legal and political persecution” warranting asylum.

This proposal comes in response to the Trump administration’s directive, which redefined sex as binary and based on birth-assigned characteristics, effectively denying federal recognition of transgender identities.
