Guillermo Jacubowicz, Joe Apollonio. Scene from “Magic Farm”
Joe Apollonio is carving out a distinctive path, reports Queerty.
This queer, New York City-based actor and comedian isn’t just another face in the crowd. His resume boasts a decade of consistent work, including appearances in popular TV shows like Hacks, Betty, and Young Sheldon, as well as the indie horror romance My Animal.
2023 saw Apollonio conquer the stage with his self-titled one-man show, a sharp and humorous take on his experiences in the entertainment industry. In this daring performance, he embodied not only himself but also his mother and a considerably older man he was involved with for financial gain. Now, Apollonio stands on the cusp of a major cinematic moment with Magic Farm, Amalia Ullman‘s absurdist satire that generated buzz at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlinale earlier this year.
Magic Farm satirizes the trendy editorial brands that transform clueless cultural exploration into viral “cool” content. The film follows a quirky American documentary team that travels to Argentina to profile an obscure musician, only to discover they’ve landed in the wrong country. Undeterred, they convince the locals to fabricate their own viral sensation.
Even alongside a cast of acclaimed indie actors like Chloë Sevigny, Alex Wolff, and Simon Rex, Apollonio shines as Justin, the queer member of the documentary crew. His charming flirtation with a local hotel receptionist unexpectedly becomes the emotional core of Magic Farm.
Already earning accolades for his performance (Indiewire recognized him as one of their 12 “Sundance breakouts”), Apollonio’s role in Magic Farm signals a promising future.
Magic Farm opens in select theaters on April 25.
